Surface+Light+Space

Surface+Light+Space is an architectural firm based in Newcastle upon Tyne formed by award winning practitioner Stuart Palmer. The company aims to reconcile the different scientific, emotional and economic aspects of every project they undertake.

The branding process explored many different conceptual directions, but was bound by Stuarts philosophy that 'A building is essentially a structure supporting a SURFACE that admits and reflects LIGHT revealling SPACE'. The final form was very understated and typographically driven, with an unusual but complimentary palette of cyan, grey and peach tones.

The website was intended to provide a platform for reflection and discussion which was implemented in the form of a weblog and an inspiration strands. These are unusually navigated horizontally, using the logo as an avator which overrides the browser's sidebars. The portfolio combines both renderings and photographs of completed projects with examples of Stuart's trademark pen sketches, injecting a subtle but central sense of ownership and character.
